The Kristen Quilt in Rifle Paper Co. Halloween

As a huge fan of Rifle Paper Co., I couldn’t resist their new Halloween collection. The prints are absolutely adorable, and I knew I had to make a quilt with them ASAP! The Kristen Quilt pattern was the perfect choice to let these fun, spooky designs shine.

Picking the right background and accent fabrics for this project was a bit more challenging than usual. Normally, this is one of my favorite parts of the quilting process, but a couple of things about this collection made it tricky.

Why It Was Tricky:

1. Light and Dark Prints: This collection has a mix of very light (almost white) and very dark (black) prints. I wanted the prints to stand out, so using black or white for the background or accent fabrics was out of the question.

2. Limited Color Palette: Unlike many Rifle Paper Co. collections, which are bursting with color, this one has a more limited palette. I usually like to match my background fabric to a color from the collection or find something that coordinates perfectly, so this was a little tricky.

The Fabric Choices:

After playing around with my Pure Solids swatches, I finally decided on a bright green (Dark Citron) for the accent fabric. For the background, I ordered both Gentle Feather and Ash to test out. Once they arrived, it was clear that Ash was the better choice. However, after finishing the quilt, I realized that Dark Citron and Ash have almost the same value (see image below). If you look at a black-and-white photo of the quilt, you can barely tell the two colors apart. In hindsight, a darker, warm gray like Steel (see below again) would have added more contrast—but overall, I’m still happy with how it turned out!

Fun Quilting Details:

I decided to lean into the Citron color and used a matching thread for the quilting, and I absolutely LOVE how it turned out. It’s a subtle detail, but one that really makes me smile.

For the backing, I used one of the white prints from the collection, and for the binding, I opted for the same print in black, creating a nice contrast to frame the quilt.
