Economy Block I-Spy Baby Quilt
On my husband's side of the family, we have 9 nieces and nephews. But on my side of the family? Currently 0! That is going to change later this year though because my sister is expecting her first child and I am SO excited.
(This is my mom with all of her daughters. We range in age from 28 to 39 — I'm the oldest. This is the first time we have been together in 8 years!)
A while back, I offered to throw her a baby shower over Zoom. We only live about an hour apart, but the rest of our family is all over the country so having her come to my house for a virtual shower seemed like the best option.
BUT then my other sister (I have 3 sisters) had the idea that my mom and my sisters would show up to surprise her. No one in my family can keep a secret and I can't believe we managed to pull it off, but this weekend my mom, my cousin, and my other two sisters showed up at her baby shower as a surprise. It was amazing. We are just missing our brother who wasn't able to join us.
Since this is my first niece or nephew on my side of the family, I am going to spoil him with quilts. First up, I made him an economy block I-spy quilt (using this tutorial) to use as a tummy time play mat. (I will be making him a larger, more snuggly quilt before he is born.)
I wanted to use lots of colors and contrast since it is going to be for tummy time and I had a blast going through my stash and just picking random favorite fabrics.
The backing is a favorite old school Cotton + Steel print that I have had in my stash for a while. I like that it calms down the craziness of the quilt top just a little bit.
This quilt has already been washed and gifted and now I get to decide what to make for his next quilt. I am so excited!

Can I have the pattern for this quilt? I would like to make a dinosaurs quilt. Tks.

Your quilt brought back memories of Christmas 2010. Made the grandsons I spy quilts. Everything they were interested in was on the quilt. Tom and Jerry, road runner, wizard of oz. Ect, ect, ect. Costly, but really had fun with it.

I made 2 I-spy quilts from that same tutorial for my twin grandsons, born in 2021. I loved finding so many cute fussy cuts to use in the centers of the blocks! The nerd in me wanted it to be a “learning” quilt, and now they are starting to be able to identify all the fun things I put in the quilts!

Wow! I’m so excited for you – your first niece or nephew on your side! What a darling quilt! I just might have to make my next door neighbor one who is having a boy in August! Thank you for your post!
