The Molly Quilt in AGF Pure Solids

I have built up a pretty good stash of Art Gallery solids and a few weeks ago I dug into my collection of Art Gallery Pure Solids to create a version of the Molly Quilt Pattern that feels perfect for fall—while still featuring plenty of my favorite pinks and purples.

While I naturally gravitate toward prints for most projects, there’s something so striking about a quilt made entirely with solids. Solids give a pattern a clean, modern look, allowing the design itself to shine in a totally different way. I pulled together a bundle from my stash that included warm grays, earthy tones, and rich jewel-like hues, along with a light, warm gray for the background.

The Design Process

The Molly Quilt Pattern was designed with movement in mind, and I leaned into that concept by incorporating a mix of colors and values. The variation in tones creates depth and draws the eye to different parts of the quilt, giving it a dynamic feel. For this version, I followed the fat eighth directions, making it a great stash-busting project!

Backing and Quilting

While I usually have a good selection of backing fabrics on hand, nothing in my stash quite worked for this quilt. So, I had no choice but to do a little fabric shopping (a true hardship, I know!). I ended up selecting a beautiful 108” wide fabric from Maureen Cracknell’s latest collection, and it paired perfectly with the quilt top.

For the quilting, I used a serpentine stitch—a current favorite of mine. My new machine handles it so smoothly, and having the stitch built in still feels like such a treat. While I’ve been leaning on this method a lot lately, I’m sure I’ll branch out to something new soon.
