Quilt Roulette: The Art Gallery Fabrics Katie Quilt
Making a Scrappy, Rainbow-Themed Katie Quilt with Art Gallery Fabrics
When I first pulled Art Gallery Fabrics (AGF) as the theme for this quilt, I thought it would be a breeze since I have a pretty solid stash of AGF fabrics. But then, I decided to make the quilt in a rainbow theme, which definitely added a layer of difficulty—especially because my stash of green fabrics is lacking! However, I made it work and love the result.
The Katie Quilt Pattern is one of my older patterns, originally released in 2018. It was designed to be a basic pattern that quilters could personalize with their own creative ideas. Over time, I’ve learned that while some quilters love this freedom, many prefer more detailed instructions. That said, I decided to embrace the scrappy, rainbow style for this version, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out.
If you’re looking to make your own scrappy Katie Quilt, the instructions are easily adaptable. Here’s how I approached it:
• I started with the pink block in the upper left corner and worked through one color at a time.
• After assembling the blocks, I added the cornerstones and sashing using Pure Solids from my stash. I initially wanted to use prints, but my AGF green print stash wasn’t quite enough, and I didn’t want to reuse any fabrics. The Pure Solids were the perfect solution since they complement AGF prints beautifully.
The backing fabric is a voile print by Maureen Cracknell that I’ve had in my collection for a while. One lesson learned: AGF voile doesn’t stick to tape well, so basting was a challenge, but I got it done!
For quilting, I went with the tried-and-true serpentine stitch, which added just the right texture. I decided to use the backing fabric for the binding—something I hadn’t done before—but I’m really pleased with how it turned out.
