A Scrappy, Rainbow Irene Quilt

A Scrappy, Rainbow Irene Quilt

The fabric strip size for the Irene Quilt Pattern was one of the scrap sizes I have been cutting as part of my scrap cutting/organization project this year (since it's the same size needed for the Iris Quilt Pattern). Perfect! And perfect for a scrappy rainbow quilt since I already had tons of pieces cut.

To plan my layout, I printed out the coloring page for the pattern and then just filled in ROYGBIV over and over across the page. Usually when making a rainbow quilt, I try to stick to colors that seem to go pretty well together, but I decided to just go completely random on this quilt — neon included. The finished product is a little less curated looking than what I normally make, but I am thrilled with the zaniness of the quilt and love how it turned out.

For the sashing fabric, I used the Mini Dot in Natural print from Meadow Star. Dear Ruby Star Society: if you decide to make a new basic fabric, please do these mini dots in lots of tone on tone colors. I love them!

The background squares are coincidentally from another Meadow collection — it's called Meadow Lane by Sara Davies for Riley Blake. I have no idea where I bought this fabric, but I loved that it had a lot going on visually, but was black and white so it was able to blend into the quilt without stealing the show.

For the quilting, I did a simple serpentine stitch. It gives the quilt fantastic texture while still feeling drape-y.

The backing fabric is a wideback Speckled print. The binding is a Figo Fabrics print from my stash called Wintertide Starbursts by the Printed Peanut that I was so excited to use! It was meant to be a Christmas fabric, but it has a general festive feel that seemed right from this loud quilt.

Although I enjoy creating more curated scrap quilts, I love the randomness of this one and the thought and effort it took to make it feel complete. If you would like to make your own scrappy Irene Quilt, you can find the pattern in the shop and (hopefully) the scraps in your scrap bin!

Such a cool pattern! Can’t wait to use up my leftover binding strips. Looks like a great pattern!
