2025 Quiltalong - Scrappy Kristen Quilt

It’s been a long time since our last quilt-along, and I am absolutely THRILLED to announce that we’ll be starting the new year with a project that’s both exciting and versatile. Mark your calendars—the Kristen Quiltalong begins on January 13th, 2025! That’s just two weeks away, so let’s dive into everything you need to know to get ready.

Do I have to use scraps?

No, you don’t! The Kristen Quilt Pattern includes instructions for using charm squares, layer cakes, fat quarters, or scraps. While you can choose any of these, I’ll be focusing on scraps for the quilt-along. Scrappy quilts come with their own unique considerations, so I’ll share tips to help you navigate those while still providing guidance for using precuts.

What supplies do I need?

Here’s a quick list of supplies. You’re welcome to use your own tools, but I’ve linked the exact items I’ll be using for reference:

Rotary Cutter

Cutting Mat

Long Ruler

Square Ruler

Stripology XL Ruler (Optional)

What kinds of fabrics should I use?

The Kristen Quilt Pattern is perfect for making curated scrap quilts! Whether you use scraps or precuts, you’ll need two fabrics for each block: the square and its shadow. Here are a few creative ideas:

Use scraps from a single manufacturer or designer. I’m planning a scrappy quilt using Rifle Paper Co. fabrics!

Seasonal or holiday themes. With Valentine’s Day in the middle of the quilt-along, a red-and-pink quilt would be so fun. Or try a patriotic, spring, or winter-themed quilt!

Monochrome. Stick to one color family—this can be challenging but stunning, especially for black/white/gray prints.

I-Spy quilts. Incorporate novelty prints for a playful and unique quilt.

What about background fabric?

For the lap-size quilt (which I’ll be demonstrating), you’ll need just under 2 yards of background fabric (1 ⅞ yards). Alternatively, you can use scraps for the background fabric, which I did in my original scrappy version.

I’m still deciding whether to use scraps or yardage for my background since I want to stick to Rifle Paper Co. fabrics and might not have enough low-volume prints.

Will there be videos?

Yes! I’ll share videos as we go. These may be posted on Instagram or YouTube—I’ll let you know as soon as I decide.

Is there an email list for the Quiltalong?

Yes! Click here to sign up.While it’s optional, you’ll get exclusive content and updates that won’t be shared on the blog or Instagram. This is a separate email list from my regular newsletter.

Will there be prizes?

The true prize of this quilt-along is the beautiful quilt you’ll create! In the past, I’ve hosted quilt-alongs with and without prizes, and I’ve found that introducing prizes can sometimes distract from the the experience. This time (and likely moving forward), I’m choosing to keep the focus on the joy of sewing together and celebrating the quilts we make. After all, the satisfaction of completing a project you love is the best reward of all!

Will there be a hashtag?

Yes, it will be #thekristenqal, but I am not really sure how hashtags are working right now so we may need to find another option. Let me know if you have any ideas on ways that we can all see each other's projects and help each other out!

Will the pattern be on sale?

Yes! You can use the code KRISTENQAL to get 20% off the pattern now through January 13th.
