The Molly Quilt in Endpaper
Whenever a new fabric collection is released that feels truly unique, I love to look for some insight into the designer’s creative process and inspiration. Understanding the story behind a collection adds a special layer of meaning to the quilt.
Endpaper, designed by Jen Hewett, is one of those standout collections. I was immediately captivated by its distinctive color palette and the interplay of shapes and patterns. Jen’s designs are always thoughtful, and this collection is no exception.
Here’s how Jen describes the inspiration behind Endpaper:
“Inspired by the endpapers of vintage and antique books, this collection is a delightful mix of florals, blender prints, and a hummingbird print.”
Why Endpaper Was Perfect for the Molly Quilt Pattern
About 80% of the time, the fabric I choose for the quilt on the cover of a pattern directly influences the design itself, and that was true for this quilt. I wanted to incorporate fairly large-scale pieces to showcase the beautiful shapes and patterns in the fabric, allowing its character to really shine.
In our house, we’re avid readers, and there are piles of books in just about every room. Often, they’re stacked haphazardly or precariously falling over. That imagery of books sliding and tilting inspired this quilt’s design. I wanted to capture that sense of movement, giving the quilt a playful, dynamic energy that feels both personal and visually engaging.
For this quilt, I used a fat quarter bundle of the collection + yardage of the Pearls print in Natural for the background fabric. The binding is the Endpaper print in Bluebell and the backing is Hummingbirds in Sarah Green (my favorite print in the collection).
Quilting
I struggled a little to pick a pantograph for this quilt because nothing seemed quilt right. This design is called Behold by Jess Ziegler and it felt like Art Deco which seemed to fit with the colors of the quilt and the geometry of the collection. As always, it was long arm quilted for me by Heidi Rodli of Piece and Joy Quilting Co.
