The Mini Plaid-ish Quilt in Lucky Loom

The Mini Plaid-ish Quilt in Lucky Loom

How gorgeous is this Lucky Loom bundle? These colors were just calling my name, so I knew I wanted to cut into this fabric pretty quickly once it arrived. I wasn’t sure which pattern to make at first, but the Mini Plaid-ish Quilt felt like the right fit — a little risky, but worth it!

A Risk That Paid Off

The Mini Plaid-ish Quilt pattern is one of my favorites because it (1) looks drastically different based on fabric choice, (2) creates a visually interesting quilts that still lets the fabrics shine, and (3) is just fun to make.

Lucky Loom doesn't have super distinct dark and medium fabrics so I knew that this would be a challenge, but I really wanted to illustrate that this pattern can work well with all kinds of fabric collections.

For the background fabric (light value) I used Pure Solids in Linen because I knew that would be lighter than any of the prints I was using in the quilt. Then I pulled out the darkest valued fabrics and was excited that I had enough to make the large lap size. Then everything else was either a mid-valued fabric or was set aside for use in a future project.

Why I Love the Mini Plaid-ish Quilt

  • Fat Quarter Friendly – The updated pattern now includes instructions for making this quilt from fat quarters.

  • Multiple Sizes – You can make the Mini Plaid-ish Quilt in baby, lap, twin, queen, or king sizes. The large lap size is wonderfully large.

  • Scrappy Friendly – If you’re looking for a stash-busting project, this pattern also includes directions for scrappy versions or you can pull fabrics from your stash to make your own fabric combo.

Quilt Details

The large lap size quilt normally requires 5 yards of backing since it is so large, but I noticed that Fableism recently released a wide width collection called Lumiere that would let me get away with 4 yards.

These prints are 54/55" wide and I used the Fairweather print. I am super excited to see that they are expanding this collection with more options next year because they make great backings. Now we just need some 108" or even 90" prints!
