The April Quilt in Rifle Paper Co.

The April Quilt in Rifle Paper Co.

First, a quick warning: this sample for the April Quilt Pattern doesn’t have the borders.

I do think the borders are important for this pattern — they really help frame everything and give the quilt a more finished look — but I didn’t measure my fabric before I started and ran out of background fabric. I know, not my finest moment.

I made this right before we left for Japan, and there just wasn’t time to order more and wait for it to arrive. I still love how the quilt turned out, but it would have been just a little bit better with the borders.

Second warning: this is a very pastel quilt, which made it a little tricky to photograph. The closer-up photos are the most accurate in terms of color — the full quilt shots wash things out a bit more than I would like.

I pretty much can’t let a Rifle Paper Co. collection go by without making something with it and this April Quilt is so cute! At this point, I’ve made enough quilts with their fabrics that I’d probably have to go back through the blog to count them all.

I am a fan.

Addition Quilt

This is the second time I’ve worked with their Easter collection (see the Natalie Quilt above), and I didn’t stray too far from what I did last time. I used a pale purple background again, which works really nicely with the soft colors in the prints without feeling too sweet.

How It Comes Together

This version leans softer than some of the others I’ve made, but the structure of the pattern still comes through. The grid and sashing keep everything from blending together, even with a lighter palette.

If you wanted to push the contrast a bit more, a darker background would completely change the feel of this quilt — but I like how calm this one ended up.

The Quilting

One of the prints in the collection has a crosshatch design made with wavy lines. Using the serpentine stitch on my machine, I was able to mimic the design pretty well and I love the texture it gives to the quilt.

Final Thoughts

Even without the borders, this one feels very springy and light, which fits the collection really well.

If you have a Rifle Paper Co. bundle you’ve been saving, the April Quilt is a nice pattern for it — especially if you want to keep more of those larger prints intact.

(And if you’re making this pattern or any other pattern, I do recommend measuring your background fabric first.)
