Quilting Books You Should Have

After many requests, I finally wrote a pattern for this quilt. You can find the PDF or paper version in my shop!

I am a little bit of a minimalist when it comes quilting supplies (except for fabric, I am a total fabric hoarder), but there are a few really wonderful, beautiful, informational, inspiring books that I regularly recommend.
This list is by no means all-inclusive, but I think it's a pretty stellar lineup.

You are a new quilter
I bought this book early in my quilting days and have been recommending it to people ever since. It has all of the basic information that you will need to get started and some really fun beginner patterns.

You have a lot of scraps
If you read Amanda's blog, you know she is an expert scrap quilt maker and her book definitely reflects that.

Runners up: Oh, Scrap! (It's new and it's awesome) and Sunday Morning Quilts

You want to make a modern version of a classic pattern
I love Denyse Schmidt and this book has patterns for some bold, classic quilts that are really fun to make with modern fabrics.

You want to make an improv quilt


In my opinion this is the most inspirational quilting book ever. I am not really an improv quilter, but there is so much creativity in this book that I like to look through it when I am looking for inspiration.

You want to make a sampler quilt
There are so many sampler quilt options out there and I have tried a few of them, but if you want a fun project that doesn't involve a lot of crazy, intricate piecing, The Fussy Cut Sampler is a great one. I made my own last year and I loved the process.

Runner Up: The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt - I have tried this one, and it was too much for me, but it is an iconic quilt and I hope I find the time to pick it back up one day!

You want to make a quick project
I really like that this book makes beautiful quilts that look time consuming, but it is full of quick projects. Even if you don't want to make the patterns in the book, it has lots of shortcuts, techniques, and tips that will make all of your projects faster.


You want to make a medallion quilt
I am making a quilt with this book right now so I will reserve my full review for that post, but Erin's inspiring book has changed how I feel about borders. It gives you the option to follow an exact pattern or to build your own medallion. It is the best quilting book I have seen in a while.

Runner up: The Modern Medallion Workbook (I contributed a quilt to this book so I am a little partial!)

And that's it. I have definitely not read every quilting book out there, so I am sure that there are some gems out there that I missed. Do you have a favorite quilting book that isn't on my list?
