Next Quiltalong: The Helen Quilt

Next Quiltalong: The Helen Quilt

I promised that we’d host a quiltalong each quarter in 2025, and it’s time to kick off our second one of the year—we are making the Helen Quilt Pattern! 🎉

We’ll officially start sewing on April 14, but I wanted to give you plenty of time to prepare, gather your supplies, and start thinking about your fabric pull. The first week of the quiltalong is all about fabric selection, so there’s no rush—just excitement!

I’ll be making a scrappy version of the Helen Quilt this time, but you’re welcome to use scraps, fat eighths, fat quarters, precuts, or fabrics from your stash. I’ll be sharing guidance for different approaches along the way, so you can make this pattern your own.

What is the schedule?

What is the skill level of the pattern?

The Helen Quilt Pattern is designed for experienced beginners and up. If this is your very first quilt, I recommend starting with the baby size—just to keep things fun and manageable. While there’s nothing overly difficult in the pattern, I always want newer quilters to feel confident and excited, not overwhelmed.

For more experienced quilters, this is a fun and flexible pattern that comes together beautifully and allows for a lot of creativity with fabric selection.

What supplies do I need?

Here’s a quick list of supplies. You’re welcome to use your own tools, but I’ve linked the exact items I’ll be using for reference:

Rotary Cutter

Cutting Mat

Long Ruler

Square Ruler

Stripology XL Ruler (Optional)

Will there be videos?

Yes! I will make videos similar to the Kristen Quiltalong so make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel. I usually post the videos a few days early if you are wanting to work ahead a little.

Will there be an email list for the Quiltalong?

Absolutely! You can sign up here to join the dedicated quiltalong email list. You’ll receive weekly updates, helpful tips, and all the resources you need—right in your inbox. (This is separate from my regular newsletter.)

Will there be prizes?

This time around, the focus is on the joy of sewing together—not prizes. In the past, I’ve run quiltalongs with and without prizes, and I’ve found that sometimes giveaways can distract from the experience. So for this quiltalong, the real reward is the quilt you’ll make and the community we’ll build as we sew together.

Will there be a hashtag?

Yes! Be sure to tag your posts with #thehelenqal so we can all follow each other’s progress and cheer each other on.

Will the pattern be on sale?

Yes! You can use code HELEN20 to get 20% off the Helen Quilt Pattern (paper or PDF) through April 14. Grab your copy now so you’re ready to go!

Do you have any more questions?

If you have any questions about the quiltalong, don’t hesitate to send me an email. Chances are, someone else has the same question—and I’d love to make sure everyone feels prepared and excited to join in.

I can’t wait to sew this quilt with you!

Jan Baldensperger on

Hi!! My friend and I signed up for the Helen QAL but we want to make sure we are on the list as there didn’t seem to be anyplace that just said “click here to sign up.” The sign-up for the email sounded like it was optional but that seemed the only thing that would sign us up. Please let us know we have done it correctly: Jan Baldensperger and Leah Goodrum.
Also, when you suggest subscribing to your YouTube channel, is there a charge for that? For both of us, when we want to find something, we will just go to YouTube and search for the video we want. So please clarify that for us. Thank you. We look forward to making the Helen Quilt.
