January Quilt Block Tutorial - Giant Block Tutorial Series

January Quilt Block Tutorial - Giant Block Tutorial Series

Welcome to the very first month in the Giant Block Tutorial Series. Each month I will be sharing a tutorial with information on some of your favorite quilt blocks - only extra big! This is a fun way to add an extra punch to your projects by:
- Giving traditional blocks a more modern look
- Showing off large scale prints
- Creating quick quilt projects
Some of the blocks will be more traditional and some more modern, some will be simpler and some are more complicated. For the January block, we are doing something simple. I am not sure if this block has a name, so I am just going to call it the January Block.
The tutorial for a 24" and 36" block is available (for free!) in my shop. Examples for using the blocks in a quilt are listed below.

24" Block Quilt Idea
This quilt finishes at 68" x 68." To make this quilt, you will need to make (5) of the 24" blocks.
Corner triangles: Cut (2) 18" background fabric squares. Cut along one diagonal to make (4) corner triangles.
Side triangles: Cut (1) 35.25" background fabric square. Cut along both diagonals (in an X shape) to make (4) side triangles.

Piece together the quilt with the blocks on-point. If you are unfamiliar with on-point quilts, check out this great tutorial. The quilt below shows the block outlines to help you piece the quilt correctly.

36" Block Quilt Idea
This quilt finishes at 51" x 51" and is super quick to put together. You will need to make (1) of the 36" blocks.

For the corner triangles: Cut (2) 26.5" background fabric squares. Cut once on the diagonal to make (4) total corner triangles.

Piece together the quilt with the blocks on-point. If you are unfamiliar with on-point quilts, check out this great tutorial. The quilt below shows the block outline if that makes piecing the quilt easier.
I hope you have enjoyed the tutorial! If you make a block or a quilt using these instructions, I would love to see a photo! You can use the hashtag #GiantBlockTutorialSeries on Instagram or send me a photo or a link to your project. I will be pinning all of the projects to the Giant Block Tutorial Series Pinterest Board
