A Scrappy, Rainbow Dylan Quilt

A Scrappy, Rainbow Dylan Quilt

I am not exaggerating when I say that this has been my favorite project of 2026 so far. The Dylan Quilt is perfect for scraps and I wanted to use as many possible, as well as use up some remnant black and low volume fabrics from y stash. I am trying to do more joyful sewing and rainbow scrap quilts are so much fun.

Before I start rainbow projects, I try to tentatively plan out my colors. The lap size version of the Dylan Quilt is perfect for featuring a full rainbow. I leaned a little more heavily into the blue green section and a little lighter on the purple, just because I knew that would work better with my stash.

This is how I broke down the colors:

Rows 1 & 2 - Pink
Rows 3 & 4 - Orange-y Pink
Rows 5 & 6 - Orange
Rows 7 & 8 - Yellow-y Orange
Rows 9 & 10 - Yellow
Rows 11 & 12 - Green-ish Yellow
Rows 13 & 14 - Green
Rows 15 & 16 - Green-ish Blue
Rows 17 & 18 - Blue-ish Green
Rows 19 & 20 - Blue
Rows 21 & 22 - Purple-ish Blue
Rows 23 & 24 -  Purple

All of the background fabrics are cut from little scraps and pieces of low volume fabrics and all of the accent fabrics were cut from black fabrics in my stash. I have a lot of little pieces sitting in my stash that are a little too big to put in the scrap bin, but just perfect for a project like this.

For the quilting, I did horizontal straight lines that were a little over an inch apart and I used hot pink thread. This was very out of my comfort zone and I almost pulled out all of the stitches after a couple of lines, but I love how it turned out and how it looks with the backing.

Speaking of backing fabrics, I did a post on Instagram when I was picking backing for this quilt and explained that for rainbow scrap quilts, I usually use a black and white print, a tone on tone print that looks good with the quilt top, or just something I really love. For this project I went for something I really love which is this gorgeous 108" Washi print.

The binding is also from my stash. I have a very hard time using up purple prints and this is a favorite from Lizzie House's Outfoxed collection. It looks so cute with teh backing and was perfect for the quilt top.

The Dylan Quilt Pattern is available now in the shop and I know that most of you have scraps you need to use. Head over and pick up your copy now!
