A Scrappy April Quilt

A Scrappy April Quilt

This pattern is very scrap friendly, so of course I had to make a scrappy version of the April Quilt Pattern.

My original plan was to go with a rainbow quilt — I love a more curated scrap project — but once I started pulling fabrics, I realized I had a lot of pre-cut squares ready to go, and lots of them were neutrals. That didn’t really lend itself to a rainbow layout, so I decided to lean into a more random, fully scrappy approach instead.

Using Scraps (and a Few Favorite Prints)

Most of the squares in this quilt came straight from my precut scrap bins, which is always satisfying. I did mix in a few fussy cut squares from the Ruby Star Society 10 Years of Magic panel, but not too many because I'm trying to ration those out.

That panel includes lots of sizes — including the 3” squares needed for this pattern — which makes it especially useful for projects like this. Since it’s pretty impossible to find (and very overpriced when you do), I’ve been using it here and there rather than committing it to a single quilt.

Background Fabric

For the background, I used leftovers from a 108” wide backing fabric called Newsprint by Carrie Bloomston. This is something I’ve done quite a few times now — using the backing first and then working the leftovers into other projects — and it’s a nice way to get a little more value out of those larger cuts.

Quilting

Because the background fabric has a lot going on and some of the scraps weren’t standing out quite as much as I wanted, I quilted a simple grid — but only in the background fabric.

This is something I used to do more often, and I’m glad I came back to it. It helps the scrappy pieces stand out a bit more and adds a subtle texture without competing with the quilt top.

Backing + Binding

The backing is Wildrose Berry wideback by Heather Ross that felt like a good match for the overall feel of the quilt. Even though the top is fairly busy, the colors work together in a way that still feels cohesive.

I finished it off with a black solid binding from my stash.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve got a growing pile of scraps, this is a great pattern to put them to use. You can keep things more coordinated or go fully scrappy like this version — either way, it’s a fun and flexible project.

If you’re ready to dive into your scrap bins, you can find the April Quilt Pattern in the shop.
