Quilt Patterns for Fussy Cutting
I have always really enjoyed a pattern that involved some fussy cutting and I have increasingly tried to find ways to incorporate it into different patterns just because I think it makes them a little more personal. Plus, let's be honest: it's an excuse for me to look for and buy more fabrics with cute little details!
This is a list of patterns and tutorials that lend themselves particularly well to fussy cut fabrics. It is not all-inclusive because you can incorporate this into pretty much any quilt pattern, but I think these ones are the easiest to do. If you really want to dive into a fussy cut project, I highly recommend the Fussy Cut Sampler book (check out my finished quilt here). The book doesn't just make a fun quilt, but it also has lots of good ideas for how to incorporate fussy cut fabric pieces.
This pattern is great for larger graphics or panels. I have actually made it twice using panels (see here and here) and once using larger scale prints (see here).
This is a common fussy cut quilt and it's one of my favorites for baby quilts. You can fit so much color, print, and value into a tiny playmat that is perfect for babies and their developing eyes.
I took a few liberties when making this baby version of the Olivia Quilt Pattern and I just love how it turned out. It is both rainbow and fussy cut which is really a winning combination.
I really need to make a version of this quilt with fussy cut center squares! It is such a great option AND it's a beginner friendly pattern.
You might have noticed that a fussy cut a few of these center squares and I used a leftover panel square for one of them. It's a fun way to feature those novelty prints.
While I didn't fussy cut every single square in this quilt (that would be a serious project!) I did include a few fussy cut bears which added a really fun detail to the quilt.
This is another project I need to tackle sometime because I think this pattern would be perfect for having all of the smaller squares fussy cut, especially for a baby quilt.
This pattern was designed around using those butterflies so it is perfect for large scale fussy cutting or panel.
Here's another fussy cut + rainbow project — it seems like maybe I like those two things together! I didn't fussy cut every block in this one, but I did make sure that we got a dragon, a camper van, ice cream cones, dogs, etc.
I hope this gives some ideas of ways that you can use these patterns for fussy cutting and also that it inspires you to incorporate a few fussy cut pieces when you have the opportunity. These little details add so much personality and love to a project!
