Plaid-ish 2

Plaid-ish 2

Almost one year ago, I released the original Plaid-ish Tutorial. In the months since then, I have been planning a sequel. This was accelerated by the recent events (coronavirus!) that led to lots of people making the #plaidishquilt and posting about it on Instagram. Seeing these posts has made me so happy! (just click on that hashtag, it's pretty amazing)

So instead of releasing the tutorial later this year, I am releasing it now. Let me introduce you to Plaid-ish 2.
Plaid-ish 2 Tutorial - Kitchen Table Quilting

I had a few goals with this quilt:
  • A project that used the scraps that I actually have in my stash. The original plaid-ish decimated the darkest valued scraps that I had, so I wanted to go minimal with the darker scraps.
  • I have tons of leftover binding strips sitting around so I wanted something to use those up.
  • Like the original Plaid-ish, I wanted to do a tutorial that was simple enough to fit on three pages. Also like the original, this quilt is a very generous throw size (69" x 86"), but the tutorial makes it easy to adjust quilt size.

I backed mine in 90" wide minky, just like the original Plaid-ish quilt, and it was just barely big enough but I made it work.

This quilt was almost too tall for my husband to hold it up for photos, which means my family will think it is the perfect size for snuggling on the couch.

I hope you enjoy this tutorial - if you make your own version of the quilt, please use the hashtag #plaidishquilt2 and tag @kitchentablequilting on Instagram so I can see it!

p.s. Don't forget that the Tessa QAL starts on Monday! Check out this post for all of the details and use code QAL to get 20% off the pattern through Monday May 18th.

Autumn on

Lovely pattern! Did some math to get an idea of how much fabric I’d need to get to make this. Figured I’d share it in case someone else wants a rough estimate.

- Light value (5.5*5.5*12)(3.5*5.5*76)(120*3.5*3.5) =3296 total square inches. Amount about 2.6 yards
- Mid value (93*2.5*5.5)+(2.5*3.5*294)=3851.25 total square inches. About 3 yards
- Dark value (180*2.5*2.5)=1125 total square inches. So would probably need about a yard
- There’s 1296 square inches in a square yard (36 inches *36 inches). I divided all the total square inches amounts by 1296 and rounded up to be safe. Of course, fabrics widths are usually larger than 36 inches, but I did call this a rough estimate.
