A Scrappy Ivy Quilt

A Scrappy Ivy Quilt

My original plan was to make a scrappy version of the Ivy Quilt Pattern using scraps from my actual scrap bin. But first I needed to clean up my sewing room so I could get to my scrap bin (argh!) and I remembered that I had these Warp and Weft Honey prints leftover from the Hannah Quilt.

I love, love, love these fabrics and I was pretty sure I had just enough to make the quilt (of course I didn't check, but I lucked out this time). I used the various black prints from the collection for the cornerstones and the other prints for the feature fabrics. The background fabric were the squares I lost when making this quilt (yet another reason why I needed to clean my sewing room before making this quilt).

Because this quilt is scrappy, it doesn't require the planning that the pattern normally would. I actually did no planning and just sewed everything together without stressing about placement at all. It was an absolute blast.

While making the quilt, I decided that there was no way that I was parting with the quilt and used my beloved Chicopee corduroy for the backing fabric. If you have been following me for a while, you know how much I love these corduroy prints that were made using a few different Denyse Schmidt prints years ago. I have used them to back several different prints (see here, here, here, here, and here). Cloud9 Fabrics also released some corduroy prints a few years ago (see the backing of this quilt and this quilt) and some of them are still available in shops if you search them out.

If any fabric company were to release fine whale corduroy prints, I would buy them. The fabric is thin and similar to flannel, but the lovely fine texture of corduroy. It is the best backing fabric (in my opinion) so if you have any sway at a fabric company, please make more of them!

For the binding, I decided that I wanted to order the blue cross weave from the collection. I ordered it, but the shop accidentally sent me the blue twill from the collection! Bummer. I needed to get the quilt finished up so I went ahead and used it, but the fabric was definitely too thick to use as binding. Do not recommend.

This is definitely going to be a go-to scrap quilt for me since it is a great use of leftover jelly roll strips, binding strips, etc. and there are so many possibilities. Of course it would be amazing as a scrappy rainbow. Some day!
